Ukrainian Business Etiquette Tips
Business people looking to establish and grow a presence in new Ukrainian markets will benefit greatly from practicing proper Ukrainian business etiquette. Being familiar with and practicing this etiquette will give you an advantage when working with your Ukrainian colleagues.
Remember that Ukrainian culture can seem fatalistic at times and people may not seem friendly at first. Life in Ukraine is sometimes unstable and unpredictable, which has led to the fatalistic views held by some. Once your Ukrainian colleagues get to know you they will be warm and hospitable. By demonstrating proficiency in Ukrainian business etiquette, you will impress your colleagues and demonstrate your aptitude in the business world.
Ukrainian Business Meeting Etiquette
Proper business etiquette for Ukrainian meetings is distinct from that in the United States and in many other countries. Here are some business etiquette tips to help you appropriately interact with your Ukrainian colleagues:
- Use titles - Address your Ukrainian colleagues with title and surname upon initial meeting. If your Ukrainian colleague does not have a professional or academic title, please use the prefix of “Pan” (for men) and “Pani” (for women) and his or her surname.
- Build relationships - Ukrainians like to do business with people they know. Expect small talk at the beginning of a meeting in order for your Ukrainian colleagues to get to know you. Wait for your colleague to switch the conversation topic from personal to business.
- Be diplomatic - When conversing with Ukrainian colleagues you do not know very well, be cautious of their feelings when delivering information. Once your colleagues know you better, expect to engage in more frank conversation. If you don't speak Ukrainian, consider hiring a Ukrainian translator or interpreter to demonstrate your professionalism and facilitate communication.

- Dress formally - Men should wear suits and women should wear suits or dresses.
- Put academic titles on business cards - Ukrainians respect academic degrees. Also, please translate one side of your business card into Ukrainian.
- Shake hands - Shake hands with your Ukrainian colleagues upon initial meeting. Please maintain eye contact and repeat your name during each handshake. Shake hands again when departing.
Other helpful etiquette tips for Ukrainian business meetings include:
- Don’t expect to strictly follow an agenda. Ukrainians see agendas as guidelines for further discussion. Don’t be surprised if not all the conversation during a meeting revolves around business.
- Go that extra mile and impress your Ukrainian colleagues by providing them with a Ukrainian translation of all of your pertinent documents.
- The government plays a large role in the business atmosphere of Ukraine. It is important for businesses to have personal relationships with people in governing bodies. The rules that the government follows when interacting with businesses are not always clear. This frustrates Ukrainian and foreign business people alike.
- When at dinner with Ukrainian colleagues, always partake in toasts. If you don’t drink, please say you have medical issues. If you are not drinking alcohol, do not clink glasses during the toast. The host toasts first. You will be expected to reciprocate later in the meal.
- Business meetings often take place over meals, as this helps build relationships. Do not be surprised if you are invited to a business meeting with a meal in a colleague’s home.
- Ukrainians operate under traditional gender roles. Ukrainian men will open doors for women, pour their drinks and light their cigarettes.
- Some Ukrainians are superstitious. Please do not shake hands over a threshold. Also please do not pass anything over a threshold. Both gestures are considered bad luck.
