Fun French fact:

Some linguists have observed that modern, Canadian French maintains many similarities to the French used in Paris in the 1700s.

So, is it Canadian French or European French?

When requesting a French translation, it’s important to specify whether that translation will be for use in Canada or Europe, but why the difference? French has been spoken in Canada since the 1500s.  In the 1700s, when Canada was under British rule, the French spoken there became isolated from its European counterpart. Over the years, Canadian French was influenced both by indigenous (First Nation) languages and by English.  The language used in the province of Québec grew and developed over the years and was formalized further in the 1960s and 1970s.  Meanwhile, French within France continued to grow and develop its own form.
